Iris and Right Now

This post is really about Iris, but I have to live in the now, and now I am also blanching peas to freeze.

With each new bloom that appears in the garden, the Iris they just keep getting better and better. Puccini is blooming and it is Michael's favorite.

This is our first spring with strawberries. Definately a nice garden addition.

And this Red Delicious Apple is not supposed to do well in our region (although they did sell it at the nursery which is where I picked it up, go figure....) So time will tell. Hopefully we will get some apples. There are a rediculous amount of blossoms and bees. Isn't that a good sign?

Can I just smudge this color onto my face? California Poppy eye, check and lip color, with flowers behind the ears and I'll be ready to go. Oh yeah, Iris....

This was a gift from Julie my neighbor although I'm still thinking about eye color.

This is from Leslie (lip color) I have taken photos of these to take to the Iris Sale so hopefully the photos that they have available, will help me be able to identify this one. The previous Iris is an old-timey one so it's name is forever lost with the people that planted it up at Mount Charleston. You can tell by it's appearance that it is an older variety because of it's narrow falls.

This one is called White Fox and I purchased it from the Iris sale last June.

And this is an unknow Space Age variety because of it's horns (the beards that have an unusual flair) and you can see how they lift in the photo (the beard is the catepillar). I am still trying to identify the name of this one.

I feel like donning some dramatic eye color changing my name....

Iris Rapture

This weekend is the Las Vegas Iris Society rhizome sale at Plantworld Nursery on Charleston Blvd. As you can see from the photos, the choices were phenomenal. There were so many to choose from that I stood there stunned by all of the selections.

Jennifer was there, a member of the Iris Society we met at the show back in April. She is an avid iris gardener and has over 75 iris in her collection. In speaking with another member, she shared that she had over 200, and as she spoke I stood there speechless. All of could think of was Spring, and nightfall, right at dusk, with all of the glowing blossoms. Iris are truely Otherworldly.

So we came home with "Artic Fox", all white, ruffly with orange beard, "Rustic Royalty", Pale orange yellow on top with maroon falls, and "Baltic Sea", a ruffly all blue with blue beard.

We also picked out a couple for our neighbor. She now has Rustic Royalty and Farside, a purple and white one. I am really excited for her because once you get iris, there is no going back. You are forever changed.

Two maybe Three Garden Club Shows

Today was the Las Vegas Iris Society Spring Show, of course I arrived during judging so I snapped a couple of photos and had to leave. Can you imagine being escorted out of an iris show? But it wasn't like that. So here are the fabulous purple iris, and the next photo is my favorite yellow, that is all that I was able to snap. The yellow are Joyce Terry.

On the way out Michael and I met a couple of members of the Iris Society, and one was recently elected new president and soon will take office. She had iris available for sale so we walked out with 3 lovely new iris for the side patio bed, now deemed the iris bed.

The rose show was lovely and we have our favorites


This is Gizmo, a sweet little miniature rose.

This is in a container and named Orange Honey. We are learning to use macro on the camera, however switching back and forth for the long shots doesn't always pan out. So I appologize for the slightly blurry quality of the photos.

These are Playboy, and in the next photograph the pink are calledPlaygirl. Look at the ruffly edges. The quality of the photos is again from using macros. I'll master that.

Clear the palet with a simple white rose.

And a lovely yellow.In speaking with a couple of the members of the rose society, they highly praise a nursery known for it's roses named Otto and Sons in Fillmore, CA and make special trips to purchase their roses there because of the selection available.

There was also another Iris Show held at the Galleria Mall, but we didn't go. It's wonderful to have 3 spring garden shows in one day.
